For the record, there are no elk in Idaho’s Unit 27.  There are two moose and quite a few deer, but no elk.  It was still better than the best day at work!

Yes, I was elk hunting rather than attending the October Range Committee (RC) meeting.  Don’t blame me, the State of Idaho set the dates, I simply followed the rules.  Thankfully, the other RC members really stepped up and got a lot done in my absence (some might even say because of my absence).  So what happened?

Dan V(Edit), a club member, volunteered to replace gutters as needed once the club made materials available. There was an estimate of $350 to $400 for materials.  Also, an estimate from a contractor was submitted at $2800.  Phil P(Edit) will coordinate with Cy M(Edit) to purchase and deliver the materials to the range for Dan to install.  Much thanks to Dan, Phil, and Cy.

Don B(Edit), the Practical Weapons (P/W) Match Director, submitted a match application for the 2008 season.  No other applications were received by then, but several have been received since and will be discussed at the November meeting.  Please try to get your match applications in as soon as possible!

Don also requested the construction of some additional berms for the P/W matches that would lie behind and parallel to the existing 50-yard berm.  This would create additional “shooting bays” so multiple scenarios could be run at the same time to shorten the time needed to complete the match. Don has contacted a club member who knows several pool contractors looking for a place to “get rid of dirt” at no charge.  Lincoln Clay Products has offered their equipment to move dirt around the range.  This needs to be verified by the Board members involved in discussions with Lincoln Clay.  Dan R(Edit) will get quotes for dozer rental.  It was decided that this matter should be discussed with the Board.

Jim L(Edit) submitted a security camera contractor name to Phil.  Phil will contact contractor to discuss installation, location, cost, practicality, etc.

Phil ordered 2 cases of amber shooting glasses, enough red & yellow traffic tape to be placed on concrete in front and behind shooting benches. Existing tape has worn to point of needing to be replaced.

There was a request to ask the Board of Directors what the status is of the ADA compliant plan for the range.

There was a request to discuss the proposed updated Range Rules.  Due to the RC not having copies of the updated rules, the subject was postponed until the next RC meeting.

As I said, those guys really knocked out some work.  As we get ready to wrap up this year, I want to reiterate getting those match applications in early.  Also, we’ll be looking for a few good folks to join the RC starting next January.  Please consider volunteering for the good of the club. Thanks,

Glenn ((916) (Edit) or (Edit).)

Our summer is over, the days shorten and the mornings are cool and crisp.  The Dillman Range has certainly been busy with hunter sight-ins and match activities.

Prior to the rains the 100 yard berm will be repaired, rain gutters will need attention as well as the roof.  Additionally, a video surveillance system is being considered.  Recently there have been a rash of the wrong ammo in the right firearm or the right ammo in the wrong firearm.  Fortunately in all instances proper eye protection was in place and no permanent shooter injuries were sustained.  Unfortunately however, the firearms received serious damage.  Having more than one caliber firearm and different ammo for each on the bench at the same time invites a potential disaster.  Pay close attention and avert the obvious outcome.

Uncasing and re-casing your firearms at the shooting bench with the action open and the muzzle pointing down range is working out as a safer method.  This has been initiated to eliminate opening and closing of the cases on the benches behind the firing line that causes sweeping other shooters.

Please treat our front gate with a gentle hand.  Don't let it swing open and bang to a stop.

Benches 13, 14, 15 and 16 are the only benches from which you may shoot the 200 meter gong, using lead bullets only.

Remember . . . keep your finger off of the trigger until your target is in your sights.
