Text Box: The Range Committee will generally meet at the Indoor Range/Club House on the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. All club members are invited to attend. Next meeting is (01/12/06).

As we quickly approach the end of another year we look back at what the Range Committee has accomplished this year.

Most recently we revised the Range Committee Charter and submitted it to the Executive Committee. This document, last revised in November 1989, was in need of some updating. We hope to present the Charter to the General Membership in January for final approval.

At the November General Business Meeting, the Range Calendar for 2006 was approved and has already been posted on our Club website. The calendar included all of our old standards and had added a competition, the Practical Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun Matches. The Calendar also listed the Juniors activities for the first six months of the year, more of their activities will be added as they are scheduled. You will also notice that both the Lincoln High School Rifle Team and the 4-H Club are using the Indoor Range on a weekly basis.

The Practical Pistol, Rifle and Shotgun matches will be conducted on the first Saturday of each month, beginning in January for the complete year. Shooting will start at 8AM with a Tyro Match for those new to the sport and then the match, consisting of four scenarios will be fired. Each month will find different scenarios, testing the competitor’s skills with the three weapons systems. The match fee will be $10 and awards will be presented at the Annual Potluck in January 2007. If you haven’t tried this sport, come on out an watch it. If you have a service style pistol or revolver with holster and ammunition carrier, a shotgun capable of carrying 5 rounds of ammunitions, and a center-fire rifle capable of carrying 4 or more rounds, you have the weapons needed to compete and the Tyro match will test your skills to see that you can safely shoot with the other competitors. Hope to see you at one of these matches. If you have any questions, there is a brief description of these matches on the Club’s web site and an address for the match director.

For the past few months the Range Committee, in coordination with the Club Range Master, have been conducting a range maintenance morning on the second Saturday of each month from 7:30AM until noon. This has allowed us to complete several needed projects at the Dillman Range including: replacing the target carriers at the 200 yard range with new lumber; replacing the needed screens along the firing line to deflect the brass from adjacent shooters; adding a red safety line, just forward of the firing benches, making it easier to keep shooters in a safe area during public shooting periods; reorganized the rifle target storage area; and added signs advising shooters to pick up their brass after firing. We still have projects that need to be completed and help is always welcome at these organized events. This is a good way to get your “Work Assessment” signed off for the year.

As for future projects, the Range Committee Chairperson and the Club President meet with a consultant from Action Targets and the Lincoln Police Department to develop preliminary information on the building of the new indoor range for the Club.  The proposal would include a range with 12 firing points for a distance of up to 50 meters.  It would be capable of handling all calibers of handguns and most rifles.  We hope to continue with the development of this project in close coordination with the City of Lincoln in the future.

We still need to remind individual’s using the club’s facilities to do so with care, as we continue to find signs of accidental discharges leading to property destruction and potential personal injury or death.  Remember, follow the safety rules for our ranges and keep your muzzle pointed in a safe direction and your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire your weapon.  These simple rules would eliminate most of our accidental discharges.

The members of the Range Committee would like to take this time to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Join us at your next Range Committee meeting, January 12, 2006 at 7PM at the Indoor Range, McBean Park.
